Autoplate 4000 is a microprocessor-controlled spiral plater used for bacterial enumeration, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and mutagenicity assays. The plater deposits a liquid sample in a spiral pattern onto the surface of a rotating agar plate, creating a three-log dilution effect. Because this plating action continuously reduces the number of microbes placed along the spiral track, most serial dilutions typically required for plating are eliminated. The standard 50-microliter exponential deposition mode covers the range from 400–400,000 cfu/ml on one plate, without dilution. Spiral plating saves time and materials by reducing the use of disposables, and simplifies plate counting.
